"AITAH for pulling the fire alarm at 4 AM and getting my RA in trouble ‘for nothing’?"

I live in a college dorm and a week ago I woke up at 4 AM to the very strong smell of smoke and something burning. My room air filter was beeping like crazy and the smell was overwhelming.
  • 03
It was 4 AM, I was dazed because the smell was what woke me up alongside my air filter going haywire, and the smell was genuinely overwhelming and making me lightheaded.

  • 05
I checked the floor group chat and several people were also woken up by the smell and my friend on another floor was also woken up by the same smell. I
  • 06
panicked seeing that other people were getting woken up by the smell and other people were panicking in the chat asking why the alarm wasn't going off. We
  • 07
waited 5 minutes and the smell wasn't going away but only getting stronger and the alarm still hadn't gone off. So, since my
  • 08
room is right by the fire alarm I quickly put on shoes and pulled the alarm. Obviously it went off and started waking everyone up on all floors to evacuate.

The firefighters came and determined it wasn't a fire but couldn't pinpoint the smell. A firefighter said I did the right thing for pulling the alarm and
  • 10
that it was better to be safe than sorry especially considering the smell (they smelled it when they entered the dorms). I had to do interviews with the firefighters
  • 11
since I was the one who pulled the alarm, and they determined I was in the right after my story matched with several other people's in the dorm.

My RA, however, is furious at me. She's angry because I woke her up by pulling the alarm and also because she's in trouble with the university dorm staff for not
  • 13
being on duty. We have several RAs that alternate night duties in case something like this happens at night and it was supposed to be her night but she was skipping her duty her sleep and
  • 14
didn't get a fill in for her. She said I overreacted by pulling the alarm and disturbing everyone. I'm not in any legal trouble with the firefighters or the university
  • 15
because both said I acted in the right considering the circumstances even though it was a false alarm, but my RA is
  • 16
pissed because she said I got her in trouble for nothing and disturbed her sleep. Reddit, am I the asshole for pulling the alarm?
  • 17
FloorAdorable6392 As a former RA, you did the correct thing.

ThrowRAsmokeconflict Thank you! I know legally speaking I did the right thing but my RA might be fired/not allowed to be an RA for next semester because of this which means she'll have to pay for housing next semester. I know how expensive the housing is so I feel bad because now I might cost her money for what ended up being a false alarm
  • 19
I_like_flowers_ the free housing is in exchange for doing a job. if she isn't doing the job, the housing should go to someone who will.

Beginning_Cow_972 You didn't get her fired. SHE got herself fired, because she wasn't there to do her job during a potentially very dangerous situation. There is zero responsibility on your shoulders for this; you did the right thing.

universalrefuse NTA - If there had been a fire, you may have saved lives. Your RA is projecting. Edit: Honestly it might be worth reporting her harassment to the administration. I certainly wouldn't want her as my RA after she's been harassing me over doing the right thing.
